Feel free to skip the text. .. most of this is just journaling for my own sake.
So starting January Garrett was supposed to be gone on business trips for a while, so we decided we needed to get some together time without the kids, even if it was a short inexpensive weekend in between trips. Well his trips to Taiwan got delayed by the pipe company, so he ended up being here way more than we thought, but we did it anyways since he has a lot on the schedule from here on out. I'm glad we booked when we did because like 2 days after booking we found out we had to rip out our entire master bathroom..$$$ so I don't think we would've made it happen if we had waited.

Day 1. We flew in on Thursday night and picked up our rental car. For some reason they gave us a free upgrade so we ended up in a convertible for the first time in my life. It was fun to put the top down during the warm parts of the day and just cruise around like there wasn't 2 feet of snow back home.
Day 2. I decided beforehand that I wanted to spend most of our time on the beach, and maybe a little shopping so we started the day nice and slow watching the surfers out our hotel window. We took the long scenic beach drive way with the top down to La Jolla at lowest tide and walked around in the tide pools and looked at the multi-million dollar houses that were literally falling into the ocean from erosion.
Then we went up and around to the cove and saw the sea caves and hung out with the sea lions and seals for a bit. We tried shopping around La Jolla but I just felt really uninterested when the beach was so close. We made a last minute decision to go see the Midway aircraft carrier/museum.
I was surprised how nostalgic it made me to be on a navy ship because it reminded me so much of the time I spent on the U.S.S. Mercy in Timor L'este. We did the audio tour and then sat and watched in awe as an old Vietnam pilot talked to us about what it was like to fly those planes and land on the carrier.
Honestly it was a smaller landing pad than I imagined an aircraft carrier would have, so it's amazing that those little cables could stop the planes so fast. Afterwards we walked around downtown and found a good place to eat in Little Italy. I was surprised to find my gnocchi full of stinky cheese! Haha but actually really yummy once in your mouth. After we just went back to the hotel and hot tubbed for a bit. We're old and tired people now haha.
Day 3. We packed a lot into Saturday. We started out with a R.I.B. speedboat whale tour because now is the peak season for gray whale migration. We saw a lot probably like 4 whales kind of distantly but had trouble following them. They seemed a little skittish that day, possibly because they had brand new calves and were protective. Our guide saw a mother with a calf but I never got more than a brief view of the mother.
The very last whale we saw up close and got a great view of it spouting and flapping its tail. Super amazing and totally will do again sometime. We also saw tons of Pacific white sided dolphins and common dolphins all over. Our captain, Kirk, told me to sit at the front of the boat and look into the water while he was driving through them, and I could've reached out and touched them in the water in front of me. Pretty sure they actually try to make eye contact with you cause that's what it felt like.
After the tour we went back to La Jolla and caught a kayaking tour of the sea caves. I went into one on foot but the tide was too low to actually get into them safely on kayak. We did get a good view of the fish out around below us and it was fun just hangin around in the ocean with a kayak and watching the group of obnoxious boys on the tour with us tip themselves over haha.
This is a pic of me in front of my favorite 17M $ house on the cliff side.
The guide had lots of fun facts about the area and told us that one of the houses had a pool fall in the ocean and he had to pay like a 200k fine plus 75k each 3 days he didn't do anything to retrieve the mess.Later that night we did dinner at the Old Town Mexican area and bought some souvenirs for the kids. Garrett finally got to pick our activity and we went to Supercross downtown. It was nice to sit down after a tiring day and just watch a race.
Day 4. We slept in and a storm was brewing so we didn't feel like going out on the super windy beach. We ended up just doing a little cafe breakfast and enjoyed relaxing at the hotel. We didn't have a lot of time until our early afternoon flight anyways.
