Garrett and I sat down the day before this all happened and made a priority list of house projects that needed to be done and had decided on putting the extra into a new pergola and cement pad in the backyard since the one we have is sinking and cracked all over, and the pergola is rotted through in some places. Well that plan was instantly killed the next night when we saw the previously water damaged ceiling in the family room was wet again! We had seen the damage before and tried to fix the problem by re grouting the shower, but clearly it wasn’t fixed. Garrett popped out the can light to see if he could get a humidity sensor in there, and looked in to see the worst case scenario possible. Black mold everywhere. He immediately started ripping out the ceiling and we exposed a good 5’ x 5’ square of black mold and large mushrooms growing under our shower and bath.
Turning on the shower revealed a pretty large flow of water leaking from BOTH sides of the shower. I called an expert the next day who said our shower pan was cracked and had to go. Garrett did all the demo that day and we decided to put in new subfloor rather than try to salvage the current one that was soft all the way through. At that point half the bathroom was gone so we went ahead and went for the rest and took out the vanity too.
After trying to measure out fitting a new conventionally sized tub diagonally in the awkwardly small tub area I decided the square area would be used best with a round tub. The large amount of water weight it carries required us to add 2 beams to the floor beneath for added support. Ken and Rob came and helped Garrett put them in.
It’s comforting to know our bath is well supported haha.
It took a bit to decide on what I wanted for the bathroom. I liked the idea of large veining marble, but I wanted to avoid getting too formal or feminine. I liked the idea of a modern vanity, but I didn't want to depart too far from the more transitional style of the rest of the house. Everyone keeps telling me the terra cotta with the polished marble is a bad combo. It may be... still going to put them in the bathroom anyways haha. Maybe if I find some inexpensive pots that go better I'll switch them out. I'm hoping they'll add a little texture contrast and maybe match the pinkish hue of the wood stain. This was my inspiration wall.
Garrett did 100% of the plumbing, beams and subfloor replacement, bathtub and fixture installment and took a random bulkhead out of the wall to expand the space. I helped with sheetrock patching, taping and mudding, and paint.
May was really excited for the new bathtub Dad made for us.
As soon as the tub was installed both kids started tearing their clothes off to get in. We let them go for it to test for leaks.
